Kirby Ann Bauer is a shy, young teen in 1969 upper middle class suburbia, sitting in her tree house spying on the new people moving across the street. Moving in is Kayla Lock's family. Right away, Kirby Ann senses a common bond they share; they both have very long hair! Kirby Ann climbs down and introduces herself to Kayla and they become friends. Kayla is blonde, popular and outgoing. Kirby Ann has black hair, quiet and shy. Can these two personalities survive the test of high school, dating, boys, and jealousy? Kayla has beauty that is coveted by many, Kirby Ann has beauty that is despised by all but a few. Kayla must win them over, one by one, for her best friend.
